Florence

sunny 32 °C

I was really looking forward to visiting Florence after reading my cousin Lizzy’s blog while she was doing a semester abroad there this summer (unfortunately we missed her by a couple days!).
Coincidently, I did find Hayley (nursing friend from Waikato theatres) at the Red Carter karaoke bar on the first night! We figured out via snapchat that we were at the same place! She was also on a Contiki tour.

We also went to an Italian leather and jewellery demonstration.
We meet up with Hayley in the afternoon to have gelato and find the Statue of David. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find him!

Venice

sunny 34 °C

Venice in a day:
Walking tour- probably the best one that we’ve done so far. I loved our guide! She kept saying ‘mama mia!’

We went to the top of the Bell Tower- Incredible view of The City of Canals!

We also went to glass and lace making demonstrations.

French Riviera

sunny 35 °C

We stayed at a campsite in Antibes – about an hour from Nice.
On our first night we had a sunset swim before going to Antibesland – a ‘theme-park’ next to our campsite.

In the morning we all went on a French perfumery factory tour at Fragonard. We learnt about the people whose job is to be a ‘nose’. They only work 2hours a day, are not allowed to eat spicy food, drink alcohol or smoke and there are only 50 in the world. This perfumery only sells their products in store.

I bought a perfume that smells like macaroons!

An afternoon in Nice.

One of the highlights of our trip: Monte Carlo, Monaco!

Where Grace Kelly was married. (we also drove past where she died in a car crash too)

James and I won 200 euro playing Roulette – the most out of our whole group. Unfortunately we were only allowed to stay there for an hour, so we hope to go back there someday!

Barcelona

sunny 43 °C

After a long 8+ hour drive to Barcelona, we got to our awesome ‘Genorator’ hostel- a really cool funky place, best of all – it had air conditioning! With a nice heat wave going through Europe (high 30s/40degrees plus humidity+++), it was a huge relief.

Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia – strangest building I’ve ever seen!

Afterwards James and I walked down La Rambla (main street), had lunch at the markets and went to the beach.

That night we went to a Flamenco dancing and tapas dinner and then went out with our Contiki group.

Beaujolais Wine Region

sunny 38 °C

On the way from Paris to the ‘Contiki Chateau’ we stopped at the Fontainebleau Palace for lunch and then bused through the beautiful Burgandy wine country.

On the first night, we had a ‘P-party’ – where you had to dress up as something starting with P.
I went as a pastry chef and James went as a photographer.

The following day we set out with our bagettes and cheese with 40 other people to go on a picnic at the ‘Top of the World’ lookout. We never found the look out… after a few too many hours hiking we decided to just have our picnic in here. Not a bad spot!
