Famous gold roof that we spent hours looking for - we thought we were looking for a golden dome.

What a beautiful city! The first day we walked down the main strip, trying to find somewhere for breakfast (nothing open) and took an old tram around the main city circle.

In the afternoon we wandered around - stopping for a nap in the rose gardens and watched some rock climbing in the city centre. We think it was some sort of world championships – but the commentator spoke only in German!

We had heard there was an open air movie theatre playing and we thought we had found it! After waiting 2.5hrs, it started and turned out to be an opera animation movie… We didn’t last long.

The next morning we went to the MAC museum. I really enjoyed the Christoph Niemann exhibition and a display on sustainable kitchens! large_IMG_1175.jpglarge_IMG_1174.jpglarge_IMG_1176.jpgIMG_1158

Budapest

overcast

We arrived to Budapest after a looooonnnggg bus ride. The bus was an hour late, but thankfully our hotel shuttle was still at the bus station waiting for us when we arrived about 10.45pm. We got to our cool arty hotel and had drinks and free snacks! We were starving after no lunch or dinner on the bus! It was so nice to be a nice clean and air-conditioned hotel after the last few places we had stayed at!

The next day was James’ birthday! We started the day with a champagne and all-you-can-eat-buffet breakfast at our hotel.
We then took a city sight-seeing bus around to get our bearings – stopping at the ‘World’s Most Beautiful Café’ for lunch. It had beautiful ceilings but the food and tables didn’t live up to our expectations. IMG_1127

The weather wasn’t too great, so we went to the Thermal Baths for the afternoon, had a nap at the hotel and then ended the day with some traditional Hungarian food.

Before heading to Vienna, we had time to go to the ‘Hospital in the Rock’ museum. It was quite a quirky museum dedicated to a former secret emergency hospital and nuclear bunker. It had hospital scenes using the old equipment and life-size wax people depicting how the hospital was used.

Day trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps:

The Auschwitz Camp has been made into a museum. It was really eye-opening and disturbing to see some of the possessions of the people who were murdered in the gas chambers; including prosthetics, kitchen utensils, glasses and even hair.
